Holistic and Contemporary Design

Located in Mountain View, the custom single-family home integrates both holistic and contemporary design aesthetics with structural integrity and functional design principles. The project entails the construction of a new 4-bedroom, 3.5-bathroom single-family residence, boasting a spacious living area of 3,401.3 square feet, along with a garage area of 436.4 square feet, all situated on a 5,625 square foot lot. Additionally, a full basement spanning 1,400.8 square feet, equipped with two light wells, enhances the livable space and adds further structural dimension to the property.

Some of the unique structural engineering challenges included lots of openings that required steel moment-frames and the expansive skylight that was at an angle, a green roof that increased weight and plumbing run-off, and strategically hiding steel beams to maintain design aesthetic.

The large span steel frames accommodated expansive open areas on the 2nd floor, with a foundation engineered to support them atop the basement retaining wall. To address limited shear wall lengths, we integrated hardy frame panels creatively while ensuring structural integrity in atypical designs like the garage on wood floor framing and second-floor decks supporting planter beds and green roofs. An elaborate framing system for the large skylight on the 2nd floor further demonstrated our meticulous attention to detail and commitment to both architectural and structural goals.
