As the founder of Element Structural Engineers, Thuy takes great pride in her firm’s outstanding reputation and continued success. Thuy has over 16 years of experience providing design and engineering services for residential, commercial, retail and educational projects. Along the way, she has grown Element SE from a one-woman shop to a dynamic team of ten.
Thuy is especially passionate about working on affordable housing projects. As a teenager she was inspired by her instructor to take the path of architecture. However, this period of time in her life was a tough one. With the loss of her sister, and the financial burdens that followed, it left her family without a home. That experience sparked Thuy’s desire to help the homeless and people in need. Eventually, her architectural influence led to her decision to study Civil Engineering at Cal Poly SLO and became a licensed Structural Engineer.
In recent years, Thuy and the Element SE team have worked on several affordable housing projects for Mid-Pen Housing, including multi-unit residences and senior housing developments. She considers these to be some of her greatest successes and finds it to be “great for the spirit.” Thuy continues to be motivated by the energy and enthusiasm of her team and encourages them all to “Dream big!”
As the co-founder of Element SE, George Fontelera is the heart of operations. George went to Arizona Automotive Institute where he studied Mechanical and Automotive Design. However, at the time of his graduation, there were very few openings in that field. Eventually he obtained a telecommunications position at NASA. After finishing a handful of projects, he was asked to transfer to Alaska. Let's just say George is not a "cold weather" kind of guy, he was born and raised in the Philippines after all. His plethora of knowledge comes from his next job at Jay Hammond and Associates. He collaborated on structural and civil projects, all the while taking classes to achieve his building and inspection certificates. This became the foundation to George's extensive construction knowledge and experience. George went on to work at two more companies, Chin Li and DASSE, before becoming one of the first to start at Hohbach-Lewin, Inc. since its inception, where he served as CAD Manager.
At Element SE, George is known to be the "Jack of all Trades". Not only is he our one-man I.T. department, but also manages the CAD team, drawing production, and initial schematic design/layout of our projects. With over 25 years of experience in the field, it helps greatly with the efficiency that we are so proud of.
George loves working with his wife Thuy and the rest of the Element SE team. He likes a good challenge and thrives on the opportunity to compete with larger firms. He takes pride in seeing projects that start out as a 2D drawing on paper come to life. Taking the younger engineers out for site visits is especially enjoyable for him. "In order to effectively apply their knowledge on paper, I think it is important for them to see these structural conditions with their own eyes in the field and understand what is going on." In his free time, George is an athlete who enjoys mountain biking, skiing, and competing in Spartan races (proud 3X Trifecta owner).
