Abode Services hosted its 14th Annual Journey Home Breakfast on Friday, when we shared our past successes and future plans with hundreds of community members and supporters of our organization.
The yearly fundraiser at the Fremont Marriott allows Abode to further its mission of ending homelessness in Alameda, Santa Clara, San Mateo, Santa Cruz, and Napa counties.
Anu Natarajan, a former member of the Fremont City Council, served as the event emcee. She was joined by elected officials, community leaders, and Bay Area residents who shared a meal and learned about the powerful impact of Abode’s work.
Three participants at the breakfast shared stories of how working with Abode has helped get their lives back on track. Two Abode participants — Chris and Jay — appeared in a seven-minute Journey Home Video, which was screened for the breakfast audience. Anthony, a Bay Area landlord who has rehoused more than 50 Abode participants as an ongoing tribute to his late brother, is also featured in the video.
A third participant — Jasmine — delivered an emotional live speech that described her comeback story, noting that she’s very close to earning a nursing degree after being rehoused with Abode’s help.
“One of the biggest myths about homelessness is that people prefer to be homeless,” said Louis Chicoine, Abode Services’ executive director. “Our 30-plus years of experience tells us that homeless people, like all people, want their own place and they will thrive with the dignity they experience with a home.”
